The MADNESS of UNCONTROLLED IMMIGRATION
A speech by John West at the UKIP Immigration Conference, 3 Nov 2007

Uncontrolled immigration is bad for Britain. It's bad for the economy, its bad for the environment and its bad for our society. Recent polls have shown that 75% of British people and over 50% of ethnic minorities want mass immigration halted. Many also concerned about the long-term impact on our public services, quality of life and even our national identity.

Labour's open door immigration policy has encouraged over half a million immigrants to come here every year since 1997. Over a million have been given British passports. Work permits and visas are handed out like confetti with little or no checks made on those coming here. On top of this there are at least a million illegal immigrants living here. Only one in four are deported. Mass immigration now means the equivalent of a city the size of Birmingham every five and a half years.

However, that's only the tip of the iceberg. As a member of the EU, Britain is forced to allow unlimited migration from other EU countries. We cannot stop it because our government has handed over control of our borders to Brussels.

Nigel Farage, UKIP Leader

Since 2004, ten Eastern European countries have joined the EU. UKIP was the only British party in Brussels to vote against this. It was obvious to us that hundreds of thousands of low paid Eastern Europeans would come here. However, The Tories, Labour and Lib Dems ignored our warnings.

We were assured that at most only 13,000 would come here in a single year. Well, in three years over 683,000 came here - the single largest migration in British history. Every part of the UK has been affected. Is it so surprising that many British people are now beginning to feel like strangers in their own land?

However, things can only get worse. Brussels also plans to introduce a work permit scheme for non-EU workers. This will allow 20 million migrants from Africa and Asia entry to the EU. Many will undoubtedly head for Britain.

I should also add that the Tories, Labour and Lib Dems all support Turkey's bid to join the EU. If this goes ahead, 72 million Turks will have the right to come here. This proves that those parties cannot be trusted to protect our borders or national identity.

But, why does Britain attract so many immigrants? The answer is simply. Britain is seen as a soft touch. Our open door policy and easy access to benefits make Britain seem like a land of milk and honey. I don't blame immigrants for thinking this way. They are just taking advantage of our government's failure to protect our borders.

Of course, the government claims that we need immigration in order to fill job vacancies. This is simply not true. Over a million British people are unemployed, half a million 18-24 year olds are not in any form of work, education or training. A further 2.7 million are on incapacity benefit, a million of which even the government admits should be working.

It should be the government's responsibility to train these people and get them back into work. Flooding Britain with cheap immigrant labour pushes down wages and forces many of own people onto the dole. Labour is creating a British underclass reliant on the state for all their needs. This is sheer economic madness but the government seem oblivious to this.

However, in a recent report the government did admit that immigration had 'unsettled people' as communities previously untouched by migration faced a huge influx of Eastern Europeans. It went on to say that public services are struggling to cope. For instance, doctors and teachers complain of the increased workload while police forces across the land report an increase in drink driving, knife crime and anti-social behaviour carried out by Eastern Europeans.

Comment from the floor

The report also said that immigrants were placing huge pressure on the housing market, driving up rents, property prices and creating a housing shortage. Indeed, it has been estimated that 260 houses will to be built every day for the next 20 years just to house immigrants. The Campaign to Protect Rural England has warned, "Without urgent action the countryside as we know it will be largely destroyed by the year 2035".

Now does this report mean that the government has finally seen sense? Have they been converted to the idea of putting the interests of our own people first? Does this mean that they intend to halt mass immigration before it's too late? Well, no. Instead, we get meaningless waffle about striking a 'new balance' between social costs and economic benefits.

According to Gordon Brown, the economic benefits of uncontrolled migration far outweigh the costs. He claims that immigration boosts the economy by £6 billion a year and should continue.

Jeffrey Titford MEP

However, he chose to ignore the findings of Professor David Coleman of Oxford University, an internationally respected population expert. He discovered that the actual cost to our public services is £8.8 billion a year. That's equivalent to £350 for every family in the UK. He said and I quote "there are no merits in the promotion of population growth itself and many reasons to regret it, especially in a country as crowded as the UK".

I should add that another academic has reached the same conclusion.

Professor Robert Rowthorn of Cambridge University said "large- scale immigration is of minor economic benefit to the existing population of the UK as a whole, although it is certainly of benefit to the immigrants, their families and sometimes their countries of origin".

We should also not forget that immigrants can claim benefits once here. Already, one in six Eastern Europeans lives off the state. After 12 months, they are allowed to claim full state benefits. They are even allowed to claim child benefit for children not living here. The cost to you and me is £125 million a year.

Mike Nattrass MEP speaks

Clearly mass immigration does not benefit Britain and should be halted before it's too late. However, it has nothing to do with race. It's about numbers. Estimates suggest that our population will grow by 17 million over the next 30 years. Most of this will be due to immigration.

It is simply impossible to integrate all these people and nor should we expected to. We have the right to protect our culture, quality of life and above all national identity for future generations just as other countries have the right to protect theirs.

Make no mistake if immigration continues at its present rate British people will be in a minority in their own country within decades. For instance, last year 196,000 British people left the UK. In the same year, 574,000 immigrants moved here. Cities such as London and Leicester are close to having non-British majorities. If nothing is done, 1000 years of British culture will be lost forever.

Another reason for the promotion of mass immigration is the government's obsession with multiculturalism. They claim that multiculturalism has been a tremendous success. In fact, it's been a disaster. Even Trevor Phillips, former head of the Commission for Racial Equality, has admitted that multiculturalism has failed. Indeed, he went on to warn that Britain was sleep walking into segregation.

David Campbell-Bannerman, UKIP Chairman

Multiculturalism is a weakness and not a strength if people refuse to integrate. For a society to function you, need common values and a shared identity. This cannot happen in a multicultural society because the promotion of one culture over another is seen as racist. In fact, Multiculturalism has only served to dilute our sovereignty and national identity.

Ladies and Gentlemen, This should have never been allowed to happen. Those elected to represent us should have told immigrants what was expected of them. They should have been told to respect and embrace our laws, customs and way of life.

However, this was not done. Immigrants were allowed to pursue their own agenda with little or no regard for the host nation or its people.

A few such as Enoch Powell questioned the wisdom of allowing this to happen but were shouted down as racists. However, the increase in racial tension and the rise of militant Islamic groups prove that his fears were justified.

Rather than tackle the failure of many immigrants to integrate our politicians sought to appease minority groups by making concessions and suppressing our own culture.

Audience

However, as Winston Churchill once said "the appeaser is one who feeds the crocodile hoping it will eat him last."

Now for instance I don't happen to agree with many aspects of Islam but I would not dream of going to a Muslim country demanding that they change their society in order to please me or people like me.

But, that's exactly what's happening here. Our Christian heritage is being suppressed and our way of life with it. People are told to stop wearing crosses in case they offend Muslims and councils such as Waveney District Council refuse to fund Christmas lights because such decorations do not fit in with their "core values of diversity". It has even been suggested that the English flag and St George be dropped because of their association with the Crusades!

Ladies and Gentlemen, This nonsense has got to stop. Suppressing our Christian heritage in order to appease minority groups is unacceptable.

It's not surprising that the Muslim Council of Britain has taken advantage of this weak-willed attitude and now demands that Islamic law be incorporated into British law in areas where Muslims live. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg.

In 2005, a YouGov poll found that 32% of Muslims living in Britain believed that "western society is decadent and immoral and that Muslims should seek to bring it to an end". Moreover, 24% felt some sympathy with the feelings and motives of the July bombers.

We now have a growing number of people who feel no loyalty to our country and way of life. We cannot allow this to continue. We must send out a clear message to these people. Respect our laws and customs. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change. Keep your culture but don't try to force it on others. We did not ask you to come here. You asked to come. So accept the country you accepted. If you still refuse to do so, you should seek a country more accommodating to your views and way of life.

Audience

As I said before if we do not halt mass immigration then 1000 years of British culture and traditions will be lost forever. We have a moral duty to protect this nation for future generations. We also have a duty to ensure that that all those who died for this country down the centuries did not die in vain. Any failure to do so would be betrayal of everything they, and we, hold dear.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please support our battle for Britain. After all, you have nothing to lose but your country.
