LIFE EXTINGUISHED: Children's Thoughts on Foot and Mouth 2001

Life Extinguished Reviewed by Alistair McConnachie

The Foot and Mouth crisis of 2001 affected the farming community deeply, and this was felt particularly among the younger members.

Last autumn, schools in the Yorkshire Dales were invited to take part in a poetry competition organised by the West Craven Foot and Mouth Group, and prizes were presented to the winning entries by the Prince of Wales on a visit to Settle in December 2001.

All the entries have now been published in the 135-page, softcover book Life Extinguished which has so far sold 1,500 copies.

All the profits from the book go to The Elizabeth Svendsen Trust for Children and Donkeys.

This book was sent to all leading politicians but the Prime Minister sent his back damaged. Lord Irvine also returned his, as did Charles Kennedy MP, who said he had returned it because it had nothing to do with his constituency!

As Mrs Purcell told Sovereignty, these three are now on the "name and shame scroll of dishonour".

However, others who have bought copies include Prince Charles, the Duke of Westminster, David Curry MP, Margaret Beckett MP, Noel Edmunds, and Roy Anderson.
